History | TAPCO Credit Union - Tacoma & Pierce County

Our History

Tacoma’s original credit union (now open to many others)

Founded in 1934 by nine employees of the City of Tacoma who weren’t getting the financial help they needed at traditional banks, TAPCO Credit Union has always been committed to working families. Originally opened as City Credit Union of Tacoma, our first branch was located under the stairs of the Old City Hall in downtown Tacoma. As membership grew, our name changed to Tacoma-Pierce County Employees Credit Union, and was eventually consolidated to TAPCO Credit Union to represent Tacoma and Pierce County.

Eligibility for membership has expanded to include anyone who lives or works in the state of Washington. Every member has a voice in how TAPCO operates–regardless of how much they have on deposit. Member participation keeps the focus on the founding members' vision of "People Helping People".
